Choosing the Right Contractor for Your Project

Remodeling your home is a big investment, both financially and emotionally. That's why it's important to choose a contractor who is qualified, experienced, and who you can trust to bring your vision to life.

Here are some tips on how to find the right contractor for your project:

  1. Start with referrals. Ask your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues for recommendations. They can tell you firsthand about their experiences with different contractors.

  2. Do your research. Once you have a few names, check out the contractors' websites, social media pages, and online reviews. Look for contractors who have been in business for several years and have a good reputation. You should also make sure that they are licensed and insured.

  3. Interview the contractors. Schedule interviews/consultations with the contractors you’re considering. Discuss your vision for your project, timeline on when you’d like the project to be started and completed, and ask how they would approach certain elements of your project. This will give you a chance to ask them questions about their experience and approach to remodeling.

  4. Check references. Ask the contractors for references from previous clients. Be sure to call the references and ask about their experience with the contractor. Did the contractor complete the project on time and on budget? Were they satisfied with the quality of the work?

  5. Review your estimate carefully. Make sure you have a clear idea of the breakdown of your estimate and follow up with any questions or changes you’d like to see to the scope of work.

  6. Get everything in writing. Once you've chosen a contractor, be sure to get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, the timeline, and the budget.

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind when choosing a home remodeling contractor:

  • Your contractor should be someone you trust, is communicative from the start, and shows you a commitment to your vision.

  • Be clear about your expectations. If there are specific details about any aspects or elements of your project that you want extra care and attention to (i.e. a custom-built range hood, custom fireplace mantel, etc.) discuss those with your contractor upfront.

  • Make sure you have a good idea of their process start to finish. When can you expect your estimate? When does their job schedule allow for them to begin your project? Will you have support with your design and selections for the space? You should feel confident moving forward with them.

Choosing a home remodeling contractor is an important decision! The relationship you build with a contractor you can trust and rely on can serve you and your home for years to come.
